HARDWOOD FRAMES / MAPLE

Art Services Inc. sources wood that is harvested from a wide variety of trees. The most commonly specified species are hardwoods like Maple, Walnut, Ash, and Red Oak: these species are both hard-wearing—resisting scratching and dents from art handling—and attractive, as they feature well-defined grain patterns.

Hardwoods are relatively labor intensive to work with. The sawing, sanding, and joining will be much more difficult to complete when compared to a softwood, but the quality you receive is incomparable. Please read on below to learn more details about each individual hardwood substrate.

Maple is known for having a light, creamy color, with reddish-brown hints. It has a smooth grain pattern and impressive durability. The white hue will darken and deepen with age, due to exposure to UV light and oxygen, as will the mineral streaks with staining. There are various grain patterns, so you can expect natural variations such as: birds-eye, tiger, flame, curly, wavy, rippled or fiddleback.
