Art Services Inc. sources wood that is harvested from a wide variety of trees. The most commonly specified species are hardwoods like Maple, Walnut, Ash, and Red Oak: these species are both hard-wearing—resisting scratching and dents from art handling—and attractive, as they feature well-defined grain patterns.

Hardwoods are relatively labor intensive to work with. The sawing, sanding, and joining will be much more difficult to complete when compared to a softwood, but the quality you receive is incomparable. Please read on below to learn more details about each individual hardwood substrate.

Oak wood most often possesses a golden color, which can lean to a silvery tone depending on how much it has been dried. It’s grain is known to get uneven and contain rays, which can give a beautiful organic aesthetic to each piece. Functionally, it is extremely durable and water-resistant. Oak does especially well outdoors, so if an artwork is going into a moist, humid environment, this wood is a fantastic option to avoid warping.
