HARDWOOF FRAMES / WALNUT
Art Services Inc. sources wood that is harvested from a wide variety of trees. The most commonly specified species are hardwoods like Maple, Walnut, Ash, and Red Oak: these species are both hard-wearing—resisting scratching and dents from art handling—and attractive, as they feature well-defined grain patterns.
Hardwoods are relatively labor intensive to work with. The sawing, sanding, and joining will be much more difficult to complete when compared to a softwood, but the quality you receive is incomparable. Please read on below to learn more details about each individual hardwood substrate.
Walnut wood is often revered for its rich, dark chocolate shades. As a species, it is considered a premium wood that is comparatively more expensive. This is partly due to it’s supply – walnut is the only dark wooded species native to North America. Luckily, walnut wood is easy to work with due to it’s malleability and consistent grain. Walnut features fine, straight grains that are notably coarser in texture. Interestingly, unlike other hardwoods, walnut will actually lighten slightly over time.
